This is an absolutely stunning vintage rug from the Taznakht region handmade circa 1960 by the Ait Amer tribe, part of the Ait Ouaouzguite tribal confederation. Its black field is made from natural quality wool with vibrant colours introducing a variety of elaborate tribal motifs throughout the rug. Recognisable animal, bird and insect depictions include camels, chickens, and butterflies but there are probably more. Flowers are also depicted surrounding the central feature of the rug which is adorned with a cockerel. To add to its charm, some of the yellow weft is visible peeping through the central neutral area of the rug (see photo), attesting to its authentic vintage nature and a sign that this rug has been well-loved in a family home. A wonderful piece of tribal art in vintage condition.
This one is a tribal masterpiece! The very dark natural field is the stage for the vibrant tribal motifs and animal/nature depictions. The life of the weaver is very apparent in all that she has put into her rug. Amazing!"

About Ait Ouaouzguite rugs
Made by tribes belonging to the Ait Ouaouzguite tribal confederation, these stunning woollen rugs hail from the Jbel Siroua region of Morocco which extends from the High Atlas Mountains in the north to the pre-Saharan regions in the south. They are sometimes collectively known as 'Taznakht rugs' as Taznakht is the town at the centre of this carpet weaving industry. These rugs are renowned for their high-quality silky wool, their traditional designs and their striking colours. The wool is often dyed using the natural colours of surrounding plants such as saffron, madder, henna and indigo. The quality of work produced by the weavers of this region is exceptional.
