This is a rare 1960s vintage rug from the Boujad region of Morocco with a checkerboard design in shades of red, orange, brown and black. This traditional patterned rug is made of wool and has a textile base. It is a beautifully artistic rug. In vintage condition.
Checkmate! The women weavers of the Boujad region always produce diverse rugs – and this one is no exception. There is always an artistic element that defines their creativity. This rug displays a random checkerboard motif where no square is exactly square and the red colour of the warp and weft is given licence to introduce itself at various moments throughout the rug, adding character. A great rug from the 1960s."

About Boujad rugs
Rugs from the Boujad region of Morocco, woven by the women of the Al Haouz plain, can generally fall into three categories:
- Classic tribal designs featuring geometric shapes surrounded by a decorative border.
- Art rugs featuring checkerboard patterns or simply large blocks of colour, sometimes leading the designs to be compared with the works of artists such as Klee or Rothko.
- Abstract weavings – a creative mix of tribal motifs, shapes and lines in bright contrasting colours, sometimes accompanied by recognisable motifs of people, animals, teapots or scenes from memory.
The tribal art rugs made in this region are much sought-after due to their very creative nature. This really is tribal art at its best!
