Description
This is a stunning 1970s knotted wool rug from the Boujad region, with cotton and occasional boucherouite (recycled textile) embellishment on a hard-wearing textile base. The rug is handwoven in a colourful palette of pinks, oranges and black in a random pattern, and completed with plaited fringing at one end. In several places, the coloured weft shows through, adding texture to the design. A beautiful example of tribal art.
One of my favourites - a very attractive rug with vibrant hues of pinks and orange that meander throughout the rug with their black companion. The woollen knots give a lovely loose texture."

About Boujad rugs
Rugs from the Boujad region of Morocco, woven by the women of the Al Haouz plain, can generally fall into three categories:
- Classic tribal designs featuring geometric shapes surrounded by a decorative border.
- Art rugs featuring checkerboard patterns or simply large blocks of colour, sometimes leading the designs to be compared with the works of artists such as Klee or Rothko.
- Abstract weavings – a creative mix of tribal motifs, shapes and lines in bright contrasting colours, sometimes accompanied by recognisable motifs of people, animals, teapots or scenes from memory.
The tribal art rugs made in this region are much sought-after due to their very creative nature. This really is tribal art at its best!
